Amber's Hometown: Beaver, PA

Beaver, PA, is a nice, small town along the Ohio River, about 40 miles west of Pittsburgh. The town is proud of its history, and of course, a girl named Amber! We headed into town on the eve of the debut of Survivor II. It was a snowy Saturday afternoon when we explored the town. Here are some sights we captured during our visit...

We don't know whether Amber spends any time here, but from our own repeated experiences, we have to say that Philly Originals is about the best food you can find in Beaver. We met these two Amber fans behind the grill, eager to wish her the best in her quest. The guy on the right claims to have gone out with Amber "a couple times," and the woman says she's a friend of Amber's grandfather. We're also hoping that in exchange for the free publicity, maybe we'll get a free sub.

They've named a street in Amber's honor! Ok, the sign may have technically been there for quite some time, and it may technically not be in her honor. The sign is in honor of Amber's late grandfather, who was once the mayor of Bridgewater. In the background is a building where the Amber-Brkich.com webmaster's wife works, like you care.

Here's Amber's alma mater, the Beaver Middle/High School. We understand that Amber was an active member of the cheerleading squad, and was the Varsity captain. News reports that have included interviews of former teachers and cheerleading coaches have represented Amber as being a well-liked, friendly girl, deserving of the Big Prize.

While we weren't able to confirm it, we believe this is a mysteriously-coded message that, when translated, means "Go Amber!"

UPDATE! We discovered that the sign has been changed in recent days (see inset)! It now reads (in code): "Amber, you rock! We're behind you all the way!"

Have you ever seen the Michael Keaton movie Gung Ho? Well, we have to admit that we've never seen it the whole way through, either, but there was a scene filmed underneath this bridge. At least we think it was this bridge which spans the Ohio River. Maybe it was the other one. Whatever the case, much of that movie was filmed in this area.

This is a monument in McIntosh park in the center of town. We assume that the person depicted at the top of the monument is a likeness of Amber, but we can't be sure. It was way too cold to be looking for signs to confirm it.
